The beginning of the group dates back to 1902, in Caldas de Canavezes, however, its genuine identity is rooted in the secular heritage from the emblazoned place and its motto "Talant de bien faire" - "To do Good, and To Do Well Done".
The motto, which stands out today as the main mission in all the groups consolidation sectors, is also the ultimate essence of all its actions. Man, is placed, at the centre of its services and guides its goals through sustainable growth and social responsibility focus. |
With several ongoing projects in the fields of Research, Health, Tourism and Culture, the group aims to inovation, promotion, fostering and enhancement of home production. Along the process of embodiment of these projects the utmost value to be upheld is a deep respect by its history and legacy.
The restoration of the Termas (Hot springs baths) and Hotel Palácio de Canavezes, although it is now a private investment project, has as its leading motivation to provide the future generations, the access to a timeless experience of this place and its medicinal waters. |

|
An hot-springs place without an historically accurate beginning, but through the few existing records, is believed to be prior to the foundation of the country. According to Pinho Leal, these medicinal waters, would spring naturally between the rocks in ancient times, and the Romans knew and bathed in them. These thermal waters were discovered by the Romans, in the year 110 A.D., under the rule of the Emperor Trajan, and were then called ” Aquae Tamacanae” because of the vicinity to Tamaca (Tâmega River). The therapeutic qualities of these waters prompted such a high development to the Hot spring bathes created by the roman people, that soon, the need to build a bridge across the Tâmega as well as a Roman road was necessary for the patient’s transport. 
From all that can be read about this place, it is certainly only after 1143 that the Portuguese royal family begins to be patron of Canavezes and of these waters. D. Mafalda de Sabóia, the first queen of Portugal, ordered the building of a small residence in order to be able to treat her skin ailment. It is believed that the queen ordered the reconstruction of the roman bridge, because she visited Canavezes frequently during the year, making the council her residence now and then, she also ordered the construction of Santa Maria´s Church. Unfortunately, the roman bridge was demolished in the mid 20th century. The Queen also ordered to build a lodge for the poor, who would seek it regularly, so they could treat their diseases, such as leprosy, in a more dignified manner. The work of Queen Mafalda, is until these days of extreme significance in the presence and prosperity of this location and of these waters.
Int the following centuries, Canavezes continued associated with the royal family, and received the Coat of Arms in the XV century by one of the descendants of D. João I of Portugal. The thermal waters were recognized as highly important in the treatment of several diseases of those days, such as Leprosy, Black Death and Scurvy. All the evidence suggests, that was probably the Infant D. Henrique, himself, to bestow his Coat of Arms to this place, since its motto “Talant de Bien Faire”, is the insignia of the Coat of Arms printed in the existing record documentation.
For a few centuries the thermal waters were administered in a rather archaic way. Canavezes didn´t had, during those years, the proper accommodations for the people who visited the council. In the late XIX century, characterized by enormous advances in science and medicine, a group of doctors and scholars, aware of the unique properties of these waters, demonstrated their interest in investing the thermal location. These plans would materialize in 1902 with the foundation of the Company Águas das Caldas de Canavezes.
The improvement of the thermal facilities, would stimulate, still in the first decade of the XX century, the construction of the building Hotel Palácio das Caldas de Canavezes. The hot springs and the Hotel Palácio de Canavezes are a national heritage whose identity was built through the centuries and that continues until today in the memory of the older generations. A place, a name, a coat of arms, a motto, a secular company, embody the genuine identity of the group Canavezes. |

The creation of Canavezes Cultural Centre (CCC), arises from the need to preserve in situ, not only the few collection that has survived to abandonment in the last decade, but also to reconstruct the history of Canavezes, for future memory.
|
Moreover this museum historical aspect, the cultural centre will also be responsible for organizing cultural activities, not only as a counterpart to the stay in the Thermal Complex, but also to stimulate the population to re-aproach the Thermal location.
